Encore Presentation!
In 2008 we sponsored a teleconference series with Nathan Ory called “The Trouble with Transitions: Issues for Persons with Autism.” Many of you commented on the usefulness of the information and insight this series provided. It was such a good series that both Nathan and our staff felt it could bear repeating, so we are going to replay the series over our phone bridge on February 26, March 5 and March 12, 2010. If you missed these great sessions the first time around, or just want a refresher, you can participate in this reprise at a greatly reduced rate.
In addition, participants that enroll in this encore performance will be able to email Nathan to ask questions about specific situations you are facing, or to ask for a clarification of what Nathan is saying. His email replies would necessarily be brief, as they would be during the Q and A at the end of a telephone conference. This opportunity will be available for no extra cost for emails related to any of the three sessions till March 26. Nathan has asked us to include this statement regarding the information he can provide in response to emailed queries:Statement of limitation:
"The comments provided by me (Nathan Ory) following my educational presentations in response to queries from participants are based on partial information provided by the participants. My (Nathan’s) responses are limited to ideas suggested by this brief and partial information. My (Nathan’s) comments are offered as ideas to consider as you explore alternative approaches and structures that may best suit the needs of the individual you are supporting. Any decisions about implementation would be entirely at the discretion of the participant."This series will be presented using the telephone for a replay of the original recording and a website for viewing a Power Point, which you will also receive via email.
“THE TROUBLE WITH TRANSITIONS: ISSUES FOR PERSONS WITH AUTISM,”
with Nathan Ory‘Autistic thinking and autistic logic’ limit and define the type of interventions, counseling, work supports that can be used to assist individuals who have autism to manage their own distressing thoughts. Nathan Ory will help us understand the ‘autistic anxiety’, compartmental thinking, and concrete reasoning we may experience when working with persons who have autism.
Possible methods to discuss are working from within the ‘autistic’ viewpoint, behavior management and how to help a person control their own distressing thoughts. The ‘Trouble with Transitions’ will explore small steps such as from the house to the car, the unexpected trip to the grocery store, changing from repetitive behavior and the inability to turn off the CPU and go to bed.
Understanding these transitions can have ramifications for all ages and we’ll explore working age adults and their versions of these phenomena. Finally, Nathan will explore the functionally dependent behavior and ideas for supporting older adolescents and adults in a workplace or semi independent living situation.Session I
